The Secrets Of Power Negotiating: Book Review

The Secrets Of Power Negotiating: Book Review

This book was recommended by Tim Ferriss at the end of his book ‘The 4hr work week’. He claimed how it opened his eyes to negotiating and he found the actionable steps in this book useful. In Roger Dawson’s ‘The secrets of power negotiating’, you will find many useful and applicable skills to improve your negotiating in not just business but in life in general. Here’s what I thought of the book…

The Secrets Of Power Negotiating

The importance of negotiating is a hugely important but often neglected skill to learn in the realm of business. Good negotiation skills allow you to get the best out of a deal but still convince the other side that they got a good deal too. This allows for longer and more sustained relationships with customers and clients for all in all, a better business.

The secrets of power negotiating is the perfect book for beginners to begin learning this highly useful skill. It provides actionable steps into how you can get the best deal you can in any situation, whilst maintaining a strong moral standpoint.

I loved this book as Dawson speaks of a win, win strategy, where you look to not manipulate the buyer/ seller but to find ways of coming to an agreement that has benefits for both sides.

The book was well structured and goes into detail on many different aspects to be aware of. This is a comprehensive guide to learn to negotiate. Including sections on, key strategies body language, negotiating with different cultures and negotiating over the phone.

My favourite section of this book was his 20 negotiating gambits. These are 20 actionable ways in which you can apply top negotiation skills to any buying or selling situation.

Of these, my top 3 gambits were…

1. Always ask for more than you expect to get.

This obviously works the opposite way for buying where you would ask for less that you expect you’ll have to buy it for. Some people are terrified to negotiate on a deal. So you never know, they might just accept.

2. Flinch at proposals.

So a good tip is to try to get them to always make the first offer. Then no matter what they say, you need to react with an unimpressed or surprised manner at their offer. This sets the tone that their offer is well off what it needs to be.

3. Be the reluctant seller.

You don’t want to be someone who will give away the thing you are selling at any price. You need to show that they are not the only ones who will buy this. If they feel you won’t sell easily, you will be more likely to get a higher offer.

Just these 3 tips are amazing and there’s so much more to learn from this book.

How The Secrets Of Power Negotiating has helped me…

I read this book last year and within 2 months of the read, it had already saved me £300. I was looking to buy a used car. After a few weeks of looking, I had found a car which ran perfectly and was asking for a reasonable price. When I put in an offer, I remembered the first rule, ‘always ask for less than you think you are going to get for it’. So I asked for the car at a 10% discount.

To my surprise, the dealer of the car shop said yes. Which by then I was kicking myself. I should have asked for even less. However, if I hadn’t have read this book, I would never have developed an interest or the confidence to negotiate and I may never have asked for a discount at all.

Now, I try to negotiate in every opportunity I find. More so for the thrill of it, which the secrets of power negotiation has taught me. In all, I think this book has saved me over £500 in the past year or so since I have read it. I am hugely grateful to have been exposed to this topic and I implore you learn how to negotiate too.
